Rottweiler

Rottweilers

Origin

Originating from Germany, the Rottweiler is a very loyal, loving and trainable dog. Living 10-12 years the dogs can weigh 95 – 130 lbs wherein bitches are smaller at 55 – 115 lbs.  The Rottweiler needs a “pack leader”; therefore, an owner needs to establish that role when they are puppies.   Rottweiler’s are extremely loyal to their family and need no training in protecting their “pack”.

Temperament

That is why it is very important to train them correctly and properly socialize them when they are puppies. Do not encourage aggressive behavior as they can become dangerous as adults.  As with any animal, they vary in temperament.  Therefore, it is important to make sure you train your puppy correctly.  Obedience training is recommended.  Relatively a calm dog, they don’t know that they are big and muscular and can accidentally knock down young children and adults.   It is important to realize these are very strong and powerful dogs.  Owners need to train this breed properly and be responsible.  Bad owners make bad dogs, giving this breed a ‘bad rap’.   Be sure to register this dog breed.

Rottweilers will love, protect and always want to please their owners.  They are also real clowns in their mannerism and in their facial expressions.  They are fun playmates with older school aged children.

They can be aggressive and overly protective of their human family, sometimes bonding to only one member of the family.    Rottweiler’s need daily exercise and mental stimulation.  This breed was originally used for herding therefore, it is a natural instinct. Yes, they will herd your children.

Exercise

The Rottweiler loves to work and exercise. They aim to please. Agility training is a great way to keep your Rottweiler (and you) trained and in shape.  For the kids (and the kid in you) Carting is another fun thing to do with your Rottweiler.  There are Carting Competitions held around the country.  Please make sure you research and train your dog properly for this type of event as you can permanently injure your dog.

This breed is relatively healthy.  However, as in most large dogs, Rottweiler’s can be prone to hip dysplasia.  If you are a hiker/camper, take them along.  A special Dog Backpack can be purchased for your Rottie to carry food, water and equipment.  They do well in an apartment if they are exercised on a daily basis, as indoors, this large dog is rather quiet and will be a couch potato.  Note: A bored Rottweiler can be destructive and get fat.  With their short hair, they are easy to keep groomed.

However, being a double coated breed the under coat will spontaneously “blow out” usually in the spring and in the fall.  Rottweiler bitches tend to not be good mothers. If you plan on breeding, you may find yourself hand raising your litter of pups.  Make sure you are ready for this undertaking before considering breeding your bitch.  Rottweilers are used as police dogs, service dogs for the handicapped, emergency search and rescue, and loving companions.  Beware; this dog just may lick you to death.
