Pomeranian
The Pomeranian (Pom Pom) originated in the Province of Pomerania (Prussia) which is now Germany and is related to the Spitz breed. The original Pomeranian was a larger dog with an average weight of 30 pounds. This breed was originally used for herding sheep and pulling sleds. It has been bred down to the small size that we see today. They did not gain their popularity until the 1870’s when Queen Elizabeth was one of the first to show her dog.

Pomeranians are part of the Toy breed and are one of the smallest breeds that we know today. They stand 8 – 11” tall at the shoulder and weigh in at 3 to 7 pounds. This breed is known to live about 15 years. These adorable little dogs come in a variety of colors: White, Cream, Orange, Blue, Brown and Black. They also have two different types of faces: the ‘Pansy’ face being more short and round and the ‘Fox’ face being more elongated. They are very intelligent, easy to train, loyal to their owners and love to please. Pomeranians have a long double coat which needs a daily brushing. Their undercoat will burst twice a year as in all double coated breeds. If you don’t like shedding, this is not the dog for you as this breed sheds on a daily basis. Although this is a toy breed and considered a ‘lap dog’, the Pomeranian prefers to lie at his owners’ feet and not be over handled. They are active however and love to play and to work.
As in most of the small breeds, the Pomeranian has a large attitude and is very independent or strong willed. These little dogs must be taught at a very young age that you are the pack leader. If your Pom Pom is not taught this, they will walk all over you and will never listen. Make sure your Pomeranian is well socialized, a well socialized dog makes for a happy dog and happy owner. The Pomeranian can be a fierce little dog, known to take on larger dogs and will protect their owner. Pomeranians love to bark, thus they are considered to be a good watch dog. However, you do need to teach them that barking at the doorbell is ok, but they need to learn that excessive barking is not allowed.
Although the Pom Pom has a double coat, they are not an outside dog. Due to their thick coats they can overheat easily. Therefore, short walks in the summer months are best.
They do prefer to seek out cooler places in the house. Pomeranians have lots of energy and love to go on walks and do demand attention from their owners.
This breed is known for its abilities as companion dogs, search and rescue (for small places as in searching for earthquake victims), help for the hearing impaired and therapy dogs visiting the sick and elderly. They are the perfect little family dog and do well in an apartment setting.
